@chunuonsee16 : Mika and I are currently on his home island of Samui in Southern Thailand (we drove down with the pups & took the ferry over). The Thai islands rely heavily on the tourism industry & has definitely been suffering during this COVID situation. While we’re here we’re looking to see what we can do to help, starting with those who are utterly helpless- the elephants 🐘💕 The elephants at @samuielephantsanctuary are living freely on two properties- 6 at each sanctuary. People are allowed to visit, observe, and feed the elephants as they go about their usual day sometimes bathing in their pool, sometimes enjoying a mud bath, or eating (mostly eating). Without a steady stream of visitors these past few months the sanctuary is struggling to afford to feed these gentle beasts the many tons of food they consume weekly. On our visit today we discovered it costs between 1,000-2,000฿ (that’s roughly $30-$60 USD) to feed one elephant per day. Currently @samuielephantsanctuary has 12 elephants (although 2 are currently getting treatment in Krabi for health issues) leaving 10 here at their sanctuary. While we’re here in Samui we’ll be visiting often to check in on them and make sure they’re happy and healthy.
